“Establishment the first Egyptian network to raise awareness of the importance of Maputo Protocol”
As part of its societal role to advance the conditions of Egyptian women and defend the rights of African and Arab women, the Association of Egyptian Female Lawyers AEFL, in partnership with Equality Now Foundation – Kenya and in cooperation with the Solidarity Alliance for African Women’s Rights (SOAWR), managed successfully to establish an Egyptian network of women’s organizations
to support the ratification, domestication and definition of the objectives and principles of Charter Protocol African Human Rights (“Maputo Protocol”), to mobilize efforts, especially women, to support conventions defending women’s rights in Africa and calling on African governments to adopt the Protocol, which is one of the most comprehensive international treaties on the rights of women and girls .
Rabha Fathy, Chairwoman of AEFL Egyptian Female Lawyers, stated that during the last quarter of 2021, the network included 10 Egyptian and Arab women’s organizations concerned with the support of African Charter on Human Rights (“Maputo Protocol”) to advocate for African women’s rights and confirm the effectiveness of the role of women’s rights. The network highlighted the role of women NGOs in defending women’s issues in a more comprehensive way at the African level, and raised civil society’s awareness of the goals and principles of the protocol, and mobilized community efforts and media to ratify the protocol by the Egyptian government and give it a local character.
